Bid for unions in the military fuels discipline fears

A legislative amendment tabled by the government last week to allow labor unions in the military has fuelled concern within the armed forces, Kathimerini understands.

Defense Minister Panos Kammenos and his alternate minister, Dimitris Vitsas, last week approved an amendment introduced by 27 SYRIZA MPs to allow labor unions in the armed forces.

Greece has a central union for military personnel but the new amendment will allow officers to elect representatives on a regional level. The unions will be given a space from which to operate under the supervision of the regional commander. Despite the restrictions, there are fears that the change could undermine the rigid hierarchy and discipline according to which the armed forces operate.
