Tsipras emerges almighty from SYRIZA party congress

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras confirmed his undisputed leadership of ruling SYRIZA on Sunday after he was re-elected, unopposed, as its president at the end of the party’s 2nd Congress in Palaio Faliro, Athens.

“The renewal of confidence in me constitutes a renewal of responsibility for a SYRIZA that is more massive, more inclusive, more efficient in the difficult battles awaiting us, for a Greece of justice and prosperity,” he tweeted after receiving 93.54 percent of the votes – only 210 delegates did not vote for him.

Several analysts said his victory essentially signals SYRIZA’s transformation into a leader-centric party, as any objections that its leftist credentials have been compromised and that it has veered to the center to become a new PASOK fell by the wayside as delegates rallied behind the ultimate cause of staying in government.

Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos also solidified his approval within the party, being appointed to the central committee with the most votes.
