Greek-American fashion designer James Galanos dies

James Galanos, a second-generation Greek-American fashion designer, died of natural causes at his residence in West Hollywood, California, on Sunday.

He was 92.

Galanos was best known for the made-to-measure garments he created for a select clientele that included Nancy Reagan.

The designer was born in Philadelphia in 1924 to Greek-born parents Eleni Gorgoliatou and Grigoris Galanos, who ran a restaurant in southern New Jersey.

He studied at New York’s Traphagen School of Fashion before becoming assistant to Jean Louis, head costume designer at Columbia Pictures in Hollywood and Swiss-born designer Robert Piguet in Paris.

An award-winning designer, Galanos retired from fashion in 1998.
