Riot unit officers sue superiors

Members of a riot police unit have filed a lawsuit against the officers in command of an operation on Alexandras Avenue next to police headquarters in Athens on October 31 which left several of them seriously injured after coming under a barrage of stones and other objects hurled by self-styled anarchists.

The plaintiffs claim their superiors led their team of 15 officers on a mission that was doomed to fail.

“We were ordered to act immediately, without help, and consequently we were led like lambs to the slaughter. We were exposed to danger and we were injured.” The undisclosed number of injured officers suffered broken legs and arms.

The unit had been ordered to safeguard the surrounding neighborhood of the courthouse where the trial of Golden Dawn was taking place when they came under attack.
