Police nab illicit antique trader in Alimos
A 46-year-old gardener was indicted to appear before an investigating magistrate on Tuesday after police officers arrested him in possession of a Cycladic-era statuette that is believed to be extremely valuable.
After an investigation that lasted for months, officers followed the 46-year-old to a parking lot near the marina in Alimos, southern Athens, on Tuesday and decided to conduct an inspection.
A search of the suspect’s car turned up a rucksack containing the statuette of a female figure which is thought to date to the Cycladic era, from 3200 to 2000 BC.
The man is believed to have been planning to sell the statuette to an unidentified buyer in exchange for 1 million euros, police sources said.
