President Prokopis Pavlopoulos has congratulated veteran leftist Manolis Glezos for obstructing an effort by fellow leftist and former parliament speaker Zoe Constantopoulou to stop the German ambassador from honoring the victims of a Nazi massacre in the village of Distomo, central Greece, Kathimerini understands.

According to sources, Pavlopoulos, who was in Berlin over the weekend for the launch of the second phase of the Documenta arts festival, telephoned Glezos and hailed him for “showing once again how genuine proponents of the National Resistance behave.”

Constantopoulou caused a scene during the ceremony on Saturday when she tried to stop Ambassador Peter Schoof from laying a wreath, saying he had “no right” and calling on his country to pay wartime reparations.

Glezos intervened, escorting Schoof past Constantopoulou so that the diplomat could lay the wreath.
