Authorities and aid agencies are scrambling to assess the damage of the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the southeastern Aegean island of Lesvos on Monday, killing one woman and injuring at least 10 people.

During a visit at the southern village of Vrisa, which was worst-hit by the quake, Shipping Minister Nektarios Santorinios said that the government had declared a state of emergency for the region. He said authorities would offer financial assistance to quake-hit families.

Meanwhile, a tent camp was set up on the nearby Polichnitos soccer field for about 60 people affected by the quake. Authorities said they would soon be moved to hotels on the island.
