Opposition urges gov’t to scrap ENFIA tax for quake-victims

People who lost their homes in the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the southern Aegean island of Lesvos should be spared from paying the ENFIA property tax for at least two years, opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said during a visit to Vrisa, the village worst-hit by the tremor, on Wednesday.

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of Vrisa, a community of some 600 people, lying south of the island. State engineers are assessing the extent of the damage, though most homes were damaged beyond repair. Monday's earthquake killed one woman and injured at least 10 people.

Later on Wednesday, Mitsotakis is expected to survey the impact of a huge landslide at a lignite mine in the region of Kozani, in western Macedonia, which forced the evacuation of a nearby village on Saturday.
