Wind energy powers up in Greece and Europe

TAGS: Energy

Wind power accounted for 10.1 percent of the total amount of electrical energy produced in Greece last year, just above the European Union average, which stood at 10 percent in 2016.

This is according to Eurostat, whose data showed wind power to be the fourth biggest source of energy in the bloc after the conventional thermal (49 percent), nuclear power (26 percent) and hydroelectric (12 percent).

Wind power’s share has grown fivefold since 2005, when it was at just 2 percent across the EU.

An estimated 315,000 gigawatthours, out of a total 3.1 million, was produced in the EU last year using wind energy.
