Kammenos keeps mum over phone call with convict

Defense Minister Panos Kammenos failed to deliver clear answers as he was questioned in Parliament on Monday over the content and nature of a phone conversation with a convicted criminal who is serving a life sentence for drug smuggling.

Kammenos was being probed over leaked audio suggesting he promised former shipowner Makis Yiannousakis political support if he testified in a trial against a businessman. He has denied the rumors, saying that Yiannousakis was the one who approached him, seeking judicial protection.

The former shipowner was sentenced to life for his role in smuggling heroin into Greece aboard the Noor 1 cargo ship in 2014.
