Key to the White House

No one objects to the idea of upgrading Greece’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets. Obviously this is necessary, especially as the Turkish threat is ever-present and given the instability in the broader region.

That said, when it is so clear that agreeing to such a costly upgrade of these specific aircraft was the price Athens had to pay for a ticket to the White House – making it unnecessary for the government to sing the praises of the American president – then there is a problem.

A lot of questions have arisen from Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s meeting with US President Donald Trump and the announcement of the defense agreement, and until they are answered, the only thing we can see that the Greek premier achieved on his visit is the creation of more jobs in America rather than investments here at home.
