Scientists keep eye on Ileia after quake

Seismic experts are monitoring the area of Ileia in the Peloponnese following Monday’s moderate quake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, Efthimios Lekkas, head of Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization and director of the Geology and Geoenvironment Faculty at Athens University, told ANT1 TV on Tuesday.

The undersea quake, which occurred off the coast of Katakolo in Ileia on Monday night, was followed by a series of aftershocks which rattled residents as the quake’s shallow depth – at 6.7 kilometers – meant it felt stronger than its actual magnitude.
