Several consumer groups have called on shoppers to boycott fresh milk priced over 1 euro on the grounds that it is too expensive and milk can be bought at a much lower price in other European Union countries. Dairy companies have responded by introducing coupons offerings savings on milk purchases. Consumer group EKPIZO has described the coupon offer as a ‘trick.’ Yesterday was the third day of the boycott, which ends on Saturday. Greece has one of the highest levels of consumer price inflation as the index shot up to almost 5 percent in May. Experts place a large part of the blame for excessive price hikes on companies that abuse their leading market position to make excessive profits.
