FATAL CRASH Two killed after train plows into truck at level crossing
Two people were killed on Saturday night when an intercity train traveling between Larissa and Volos in central Greece rammed into a truck at a level crossing. The train driver was killed instantly and the driver of the truck died in hospital shortly after. The level crossing was not guarded and did not have barriers. One of the 45 passengers aboard the train was slightly injured in the collision. The remaining passengers continued their journey by bus. Dozens of people are killed every year at level crossings despite warnings and campaigns to improve safety, mainly among drivers who ignore barriers or signals. FALSE ALARM BA flight lands safely Macedonia Airport in Thessaloniki was put on alert yesterday after the pilot of a British Airways flight informed air-traffic control that there was a problem with the airplane’s landing gear. Emergency services were put on standby as the Boeing 737, which was on a scheduled flight from London to Thessaloniki, came in to land at about 3 p.m. Fears that the pilot would have to make an emergency landing were dispelled when the plane, which was carrying 95 passengers and five crew, landed safely. Downtown attack Some 40 people early yesterday attacked the squad of policemen that guard PASOK’s headquarters on Harilaou Trikoupi Street in central Athens. The assailants threw rocks and petrol bombs at the officers, smashing the windows of an adjacent store, but nobody was hurt in the attack. The assailants then made off in the direction of Exarchia Square, according to the police. One person suffered slight injuries during the incident. Minor tremor An earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale hit Thessaloniki in the early hours of Friday morning but did not cause any damage or injuries. The quake’s epicenter was 7 kilometers east of the city center and at a shallow depth. OTE vandals Two vehicles belonging to OTE telecom were damaged by vandals in Hania, Crete, on Saturday. The assailants used hammers to smash windows and dent the bodywork, police said. They then threw two rocks at the windows of a nearby insurance firm as they ran off.
