Man dies, wife critical after pizzeria shooting

A 35-year-old woman was fighting for her life in a Thessaloniki hospital last night after being shot while having dinner with her husband in a local restaurant in an incident that resulted in the death of the 35-year-old man.

The couple had been eating at a pizzeria in the Neapoli district at 10 p.m. on Monday night when an unidentified gunman shot them several times before walking off, police said. Both victims were taken to the hospital but the man was pronounced dead on arrival. He had been shot several times in the stomach and chest but died from heart failure.

The woman was in critical condition last night after undergoing surgery for the wounds she suffered to her arms, legs and stomach.

Police said the motive was not clear but were not linking it to an incident in the same neighborhood on Sunday night when an unknown gunman fired at a couple in a car.
