Only a third of Greeks have a computer at home, the lowest figure in the European Union, according to a survey released yesterday by Eurostat.

According to the poll, an average of one in two EU households owns a computer. The Dutch are the most likely to own a computer, researchers discovered, as 82 percent families in the Netherlands own a PC.

The survey also found that only 2 percent of Greeks have high-speed broadband access to the Internet, compared to an EU average of 23 percent. The Dutch again appear to be the most technologically savvy Europeans as 63 percent of households in the Netherlands can surf the Internet using high-speed broadband.

The poll also suggested that 80 percent of the households in the EU have at least one mobile phone, whereas 78 percent of homes have a fixed telephone line.
