Some oil companies and utility providers are spending millions of dollars each year to produce “pseudo-scientific” reports in an effort to convince people that there is no consensus on global warning, ex-US vice president Al Gore has told Sunday’s Kathimerini. Gore was in Greece last week to promote his documentary and book on climate change, “An Inconvenient Truth.” Gore said that he does not expect to run for the US presidency again and wants to concentrate on informing people around the world that the climate crisis is the most serious challenge that man faces.

Pope Benedict XVI and the leader of the Cypriot Orthodox Church pledged on Saturday to work for peace in the Middle East, saying they feared a widening crisis with “disastrous consequences.” In a joint declaration following a visit to the Vatican by Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Cyprus, the two leaders said they would “intensify the quest for full unity among all Christians.” Chrysostomos II said earlier he would be willing to mediate to try to arrange a meeting between the pope and the Orthodox patriarch of Moscow, Alexiy II, which would be the first meeting between a pope and a Russian Orthodox patriarch. A 26-year-old man has been arrested in Katerini, northern Greece, for impersonating a priest and swindling a pensioner out of 830 euros, police said on Saturday. The impostor allegedly told the 70-year-old that he was collecting money for the Jerusalem Patriarchate.

Two men were arrested in the center of Thessaloniki after just over a kilo of heroin was found in their possession, police said on Saturday. The men, aged 40 and 45, were carrying the drug in two packages and were allegedly on their way to sell the narcotics to drug addicts.

Two earthquakes measuring 4.2 and 4.6 on the Richter scale struck Ioannina in northwestern Greece early on Saturday but did not cause any damage. The epicenter of the quakes was 20 kilometers north of the city.
