Work to repair flood barriers in Evros will be completed by the middle of December at the latest, Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos said yesterday during a visit to the region in Greece’s northeast. Pavlopoulos added that Greece had also agreed to work with neighboring countries Bulgaria and Turkey to make sure that the area was protected against flooding and that there is an early warning system in place. He said that Bulgarian authorities had agreed to help ease the water level of the Evros River when there is heavy rainfall. In March, the region suffered its worst floods in some 40 years when more than 30,000 hectares of land were submerged after the Evros burst its banks.

Olympic Airlines’ domestic and international flights from Athens International Airport were disrupted early on Saturday due to heavy fog, authorities said. Flights to Corfu, Alexandroupolis and Lemnos were delayed until conditions improved. Additionally, two Athens-bound flights from Dubai and Beirut were forced to land in Crete before heading for the Greek capital, authorities added.

Thieves broke into a leather-goods workshop in Nea Halkidona, western Athens, early on Saturday and stole more than 3,500 euros in cash, police said. The assailants broke in through the front door and also stole leather goods. No estimate was given regarding the value of the items stolen. Police said that they have launched an investigation into the theft.

A group of some 15 people raided an Olympiakos supporters’ club in the southern suburb of Glyfada on Friday night and stole 1,300 euros, police said on Saturday. One Olympiakos fan, who was at the club when the attack took place, said he was struck by the attackers. The unnamed man, who was slightly injured, alleged that the assailants were rival Panathinaikos fans. No arrests were made.
