Two more judges up for the ax

Another two judges were added yesterday to the long list of members of the judiciary facing dismissal for alleged participation in a trial-fixing ring, or for a series of other colorful misdeeds.

Four judges have been sacked over the past few months, more than a dozen are up for dismissal and about the same number face criminal prosecution for a series of offenses that range from bribery and money laundering to failing to table their annual asset and funds-source (pothen esches) declarations.

The two judges referred yesterday to face the Supreme Court’s plenary session on June 9 are court of first instance judge Anna Korovessi and justice of the peace Athanassios Nomikos.

Korovessi allegedly tampered with the process of selecting judges to ensure favorable treatment for Archimandrite Iakovos Yiossakis, a jailed priest allegedly at the heart of a trial-fixing ring involving judges, churchmen and lawyers.

Nomikos is accused of incurring debts and repeatedly defaulting on them, skipping work to gamble at casinos and delaying cases.
