KATZAV VISIT

Israeli president calls on Greece to jointly develop common goals

Israel’s President Moshe Katzav said yesterday that Greece and Israel have common goals and must work together to overcome their differences. Katzav is in Athens for meetings with Greek leaders in the first visit by an Israeli head of state to Greece. President Karolos Papoulias added that Greek-Israeli ties have improved significantly in the last few years. Earlier, officials signed an agreement for bilateral cooperation on research and technology.

UK CHARGES

Greek man remanded for murder

A 27-year-old Greek man was remanded in custody yesterday by a court in Wakefield, England, in connection with the death of a 20-year-old English woman in November 2003. Yiannis Revenikiotis from Thessaloniki was charged with killing and abducting Stephanie Hammill by force or deception. Revenikiotis was extradited to the UK under a European arrest warrant. He was also charged with abducting and assaulting a 24-year-old woman in Dewsbury, England, in February 2003.

Mixer recall

The Development Ministry said yesterday it will recall an electric coffee mixer from the market because it does not meet the required safety standards. Authorities warned consumers not to use the mixer under the Tony’s brand name, manufactured in Yiannitsa in northern Greece, due to its risk of overheating and injuring users.
