Police clashed with protesters on Corfu yesterday as residents attempted to block access to a landfill in Lefkimi, in the island's south. Three policemen, including the local deputy chief, were injured in the clashes which saw residents throwing stones and police responding by firing tear gas and plastic bullets. Late yesterday evening, some 300 residents were still blocking a road leading to the dump.

The Public Power Corporation (PPC) has said it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 37-year-old mechanic whose body was found in a basement boiler room at PPC's Aghios Dimitrios plant near Kozani, northern Greece, on Saturday. The employee, who was not named, had belonged to the turbines maintenance team, PPC said in a statement.

Evi Tsekou, the assistant of former Culture Ministry general secretary Christos Zachopoulos, has blamed her ex-boss, and others, for a spiraling blackmail fiasco in an interview with Sunday's Eleftherotypia. According to Tsekou, who has been in Korydallos Prison pending trial for six months, Zachopoulos was «dishonorable and immoral» in his treatment of her.

Police in Arcadia arrested a local man on Saturday alleged to have fatally shot his friend during a hunting trip in a local forest. The two men are alleged to have been illegally hunting wild boar when one of them fired at the other. The defendant claims to have shot instinctively after spotting movement in the forest, believing the disturbance to have been caused by an animal.

Students clashed with police on Saturday outside a hotel in the Cretan port of Hania where university deans were having a convention. The students, who were protesting university reforms, threw stones and paint at police officers who responded by firing tear gas. One protester and one officer sustained minor injuries. Education Minister Evripidis Stylianidis, who attended the convention, said he was open to dialogue with university students and professors.
