A 38-year-old bank employee in Larissa, central Greece, has gone missing along with about 100,000 euros from accounts, police said on Saturday. The unidentified employee, who had not turned up to work in recent days, is suspected of siphoning money from different accounts between May 30 and July 18. The transactions transferred amounts from bank customers to the employee’s account over the Internet, authorities added.

A 46-year-old mountain climber was airlifted to safety yesterday after falling during a climb on Mount Olympus, northern Greece, authorities said. The man had suffered injuries to the head and arms from his fall that took place at an altitude of some 2,760 meters. A Super Puma helicopter took part in the rescue operation and airlifted the man to a local hospital.

Police said yesterday they had found the body of a 30- to 40-year-old man in Ioannina lake, northern Greece. The body was partly decomposed, indicating that death likely occurred some days ago. Police added that there had been no recent reports of missing persons in Ioannina. The body has been sent to a hospital for an autopsy.

Police sealed off the port of Piraeus on Saturday morning after an anonymous caller to a newspaper claimed that a bomb had been place at the offices of ferry operator Hellenic Seaways. Bomb disposal experts searched the office area with the help of sniffer dogs but found no suspect device.

A fire broke out on a bulk carrier anchored off the docks of Perama, west of Athens, on Saturday but there were no reports of injuries. All four crew members were safe. Two firefighting vessels helped put out the blaze that broke out in the cabins of the Greek-flagged Filipos K vessel.

A 46-year-old male tourist from Lithuania died on Crete on Saturday after trekking through the Samaria gorge, authorities said. The man is believed to have fallen ill at a cafe for no apparent reason while drinking a beverage shortly after the trek. Authorities said they will perform an autopsy on the body to determine the cause of death.

Farmers on Saturday used their tractors to block the Larissa-Volos national highway at the Melia junction, protesting the refusal of authorities to compensate them for losses incurred due to this year’s scant rainfall. According to farmers, the water shortage resulted in the destruction of some 500 hectares of agricultural land. The Agricultural Ministry and the Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA) are reported to have said that farmers are not entitled to compensation in this case.
