Belgian airports take down billboards ‘insulting’ Greek heritage

Belgian airports have removed mobile telephony advertisements showing the ancient Erechtheion Temple with one of the caryatids replaced by the symbol of Brussels, a urinating boy known as Mannekin Pis, a Greek official in Brussels said on Saturday. The move came following a complaint by Deputy Culture Minister Petros Tatoulis. No permission had been given for the advert which was an «insult» to Greece's archaeological heritage, Vassiliki Dikopoulou said.

ANCIENT FACTORY

Bronze Age complex found in Cyprus

A huge factory complex dating back to the Bronze Age has been discovered near the village of Pirgos in Limassol, archaeologists in Cyprus said yesterday. The 4,000-square-meter complex comprises an olive-pressing factory, a metal works site and a perfume-producing plant, according to archaeologists.

Club raid

The manager of a strip club in the Athenian district of Petralona that had allegedly provided live sex shows has been charged with procurement, police said on Saturday. Officers arrested the manager, four foreign women, two foreign men and five Greek men.

Writer death

Prose writer Tatiana Gritsi-Milliex died yesterday morning at the age of 85. Gritsi-Milliex, who received several state awards, spent many years of her life in Cyprus, France and Italy. She is to be buried on Wednesday but it was not clear where.

Communist convention

Communist Party (KKE) leader Aleka Papariga was on Saturday re-elected general secretary of the KKE’s central committee at the conclusion of the party’s 17th congress.
