Italy returns Parthenon fragment

A fragment from the Parthenon depicting the right foot of the goddess Artemis and part of her robe was returned yesterday after being removed from Greece by Lord Elgin in the 19th century. The marble piece had ended up at the Antonio Salinas Archaeological Museum in Palermo. ‘For the first time in nearly two centuries, a valuable fragment of the Parthenon’s sculpted decoration returns to where it belongs,’ said Culture Minister Michalis Liapis (r).
