Probe finds no Papandreou link to Lagarde list account
Prosecutors investigating the “Lagarde list” of Greeks who deposited money at the Geneva branch of HSBC have not found any evidence linking Margarita Papandreou, the mother of ex-Prime Minister George Papandreou, with a mutual fund that had 500 million dollars saved at the bank.
Sources told Sunday’s Kathimerini that this is the largest account on the list, while there are a few that contain 10-40 million dollars. The other accounts are much smaller.
Sources added that the investigation into the list is being hampered by the fact that HSBC has deleted records of many of the account transactions as Swiss law requires only the previous 10 years’ worth of data to be kept. Many of the accounts on the list were opened in the 1990s.
Swiss authorities have also rejected a Greek request for details of any other bank accounts held by depositors included on the Lagarde list.
