Police publish photos of suspected racist attackers

Police on Friday published the names and photographs of two men arrested on February 5 in the Athens neighborhood of Haidari who are believed to have taken part in racially-motivated assaults organized by the ultra-right party Golden Dawn.

The authorities decided to publish the information in a bid to boost its investigation into racist attacks as part of a broader effort to "protect society as a whole -- minors, the vulnerable and weak social groups," a police statement said.

The two suspects were identified as Panagiotis Drakos, 27, and Grigorios-Loukas Haidas, 19. The men were stopped in Haidari on the night of February 5 as they had been traveling in a vehicle without license plates. An inspection of the car turned up a pistol, ammunition, two switchblades, two clubs, gloves, masks and two motorcycle helmets.

Police have appealed to citizens with any information about either of the suspects to telephone them anonymously on 210 581 9224 or 210 641 1111.
