Poll shows SYRIZA widening lead over ND

A new opinion poll on voting intentions for European Parliament elections shows leftist opposition SYRIZA ahead of conservative coalition leaders New Democracy by 3 percent.

The poll, which was conducted by VPRC for Epikaira magazine, shows SYRIZA of Alexis Tsipras taking the lead with 16.7 percent, followed by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras's conservative party which stands at 13.7 percent.

To Potami (The River), a center-left initiative set up by the television journalist Stavros Theodorakis, is at third place with 4.8 percent, followed by ultranationalist Golden Dawn at 4.3 percent.

According to the same survey, Greece's Communist Party (KKE) is at 4.2 percent, ahead of Independent Greeks on 3.5 percent. PASOKs grouping with other center-left parties, known as the Olive Tree (Elia) alliance, scores 3 percent while Democratic Left is down at 1.7 percent. The poll shows 23.9 are undecided.

Projected results by VPRC give SYRIZA a 4 percent lead over ND. On the night of the elections SYRIZA would receive 28 percent of the vote and ND 24 percent. To Potami and Golden Dawn would each score 8 percent, with KKE following at 7 percent. Elia and Independent Greeks would each take 5 percent, followed by Democratic Left at 3 percent.
