Skouries lawyers accuse police of illegally obtaining DNA samples

Lawyers representing residents of Halkidiki who have been questioned by police this week in connection to the arson attack on the gold mine in Skouries on Sunday accused the police on Friday of illegally obtaining DNA samples from citizens.

“For the first time in Greece, there was an illegal mass collection of DNA by the police, without notifying those taken into custody why the genetic material was being collected and without any charges being made,” said lawyer Liana Ioannidou, who called on those who were questioned to complain to the country’s privacy watchdog, the Hellenic Data Protection Authority, and prosecutors.

The lawyers also claimed that locals are being harassed and that there is a heavy presence of armed police in the area following the attack on vehicles and offices belonging to Hellas Gold.
