Golden Dawn MP uses Nazi salute to greet party supporters in Crete

A Golden Dawn MP used a Nazi salute to greet party followers at an event in Crete on Sunday.

Lawmaker Michalis Arvanitis referred to the salute as one of honor and victory. His gestured was returned by a number of those gathered to hear the party announce its candidates in Crete for the local elections.

Party officials have insisted in the past that the salute is an ancient Greek gesture, not a Nazi one.

The party is to run under the name National Dawn in the elections as nine of its MPs already face charges and the remaining nine are to be charged with forming a criminal organization.

Party spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris and other MPs were present at the event.

Meanwhile, it emerged on Monday that the evidence collected by magistrates to support last weeks request for the parliamentary immunity of the remaining nine Golden Dawn MPs to be lifted contains testimony from a former party member who claims he was attacked several times after quitting the group.

The man alleges that he was stabbed three times by Golden Dawn supporters last year.
