Center-left groups start to exchange ideas

With speculation mounting over the future of PASOK, the dominant force of the center left in Greece for the last four decades, six social democratic political movements have decided for the first time to share a common platform to exchange views.

The six groups, Social Pact (Koinonikos Syndesmos), Forward (Brosta), New Reformers (Neoi Metarithmistes), P80, State 2012 (Politeia 2012) and B Initiative (Protovoulia B) have joined forces to hold a discussion about the Greek economy and the center left in Greece. The event is to be held at Technopolis in Gazi on Wednesday.

Speakers at the event will include Yiannis Maniatis of PASOK and Nikos Bistis of Democratic Left. The two parties’ decision to take part in the discussion is seen as potentially significant for future developments.

With PASOK heading to a crucial February congress, when Evangelos Venizelos’s leadership could be challenged, there are more and more questions about what direction the Socialist party will take next. One option is a merger with Democratic Left, since the two parties are already cooperating in the coalition. However, the possibility of a new party emerging from the various movements that have been formed cannot be ruled out.
