Concessions called for over Russian ban

An employee pushes a trolley loaded with crates of peaches at the central vegetable market in Athens.

The Greco-Russian Chamber of Commerce said Tuesday there was need for reaching an understanding through mutual concessions regarding problems faced by European Union producers as a result of the Russian ban on EU imports.

The chamber said the compensation of Greek producers and related trades that were hit because of the embargo was imperative and had to be speedy. It also called for a mobilization to find new markets to redirect the banned produce to and the immediate drafting of European and national strategic plans for dealing with the crisis.

This strategic plan is especially important because Russia has begun negotiations with other countries to obtain supplies of (mainly farm) produce which came from European states and mainly from Greece up until recently. This may mean the future exclusion of Greek products from the Russian markets, despite the efforts that have been made all these years, said the statement.

The chamber further drew attention to the fact that the present crisis could also lead to an energy crisis, as a large part of Europe is supplied with Russian oil and gas, thereby exacerbating the effects for the whole of the European economy.
