Primary surplus handouts for 185,000 Greeks approved so far

So far 185,000 of some 340,000 applications for a share of Greece’s 2013 primary surplus from low income groups have been approved, the government’s general secretary for revenues Haris Theoharis said on Monday.

Theoharis said that a total of some 600,000 households, or 1 million Greeks, are eligible to receive a share of the so-called “social dividend,” which stretches to 525 million euros.

The money will be paid to those earning less than 6,500 euros per year. The official said that successful applicants would receive their benefits in the first 10 days of May.
