Boissonnas images go on display in Elounda, Crete

A collection of images taken by Fred Boissonnas (1858-1946) on Crete during the early 20th century are going on display on Greece’s largest island this summer.

The images, taken between 1911 and 1913, were shot using orthochromatic plates, a technique which was to become the Swiss photographer’s trademark.

Boissonnas’s black-and-white images of Crete are part of the highly successful “Fred Boissonnas: Images of Greece” exhibition, organized by the Rizarios Foundation, which owns the photographic material. The collection has already gone on view at a number of cultural centers around the country.

Now Boissonnas’s Cretan landscapes and images of everyday life on the island at the time are being showcased in the small town of Elounda, on the northern coast of the island. The exhibition, which officially opens on July 28 and is set run to August 31, was organized thanks to the initiative of the Manolis Foundoulakis Library in collaboration with the Rizarios Foundation and the Swiss Embassy in Athens.

The show in the waterfront exhibition hall of the Elounda community center will be inaugurated on Saturday, July 28, in the presence of Swiss Ambassador to Athens Lorenzo Amberg. The event is set to include a discussion on the work of the artist as well as a presentation of “Fred Boissonnas: Images of Geece,” a Rizarios Foundation publication which will be available for purchase for the duration of the exhibition.
