Greece beats Croatia in convincing fashion

By George Georgakopoulos

Greece retained its perfect record in basketball’s World Cup in Spain, defeating Croatia 76-65 in its fourth game at the group stage on Wednesday, which means that the Greeks will finish top of their pool with a win over Argentina on Thursday night.

Having secured qualification from two days earlier, Greece went into the game in Seville aiming at a top-two finish in the group, that victory over Croatia has now ensured.

Playing a tight defensive game, the Greek national team shook off a poor scoring record in free throws and three-pointers, to strangle the Croatian frontline and impose its game in emphatic fashion.

This was the most convincing win out of the four Greece has already managed in the tournament, not only because it was against a credible opponent but also because it highlighted the strengths and the great teamwork of the players of coach Fotis Katsikaris.

Costas Kaimakoglou and Costas Papanikolaou scored 14 points each, while Yiannis Bourousis notched up 13.
