Representatives of all major political parties yesterday paid tribute to Giorgos Koiliaris, a war correspondent for state television ERT who died on Saturday from head injuries he sustained in a road accident in Afghanistan in October. Koiliaris, 54, had been flown back to Athens after the accident and had been in an intensive-care unit since then. Government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros said Koiliaris would be remembered for his “sensitivity, attention to detail and dedication in his quest for the truth.” PASOK spokesman Giorgos Papaconstantinou described Koiliaris as “a fighter, a journalist in every sense of the word.”

An Athens court on Saturday passed down jail sentences of 14 months and 10 months, respectively, to songwriter Nikos Karvellas and his partner, television presenter Annita Pania, after the pair failed to stop at a police road signal last week. The couple were convicted on charges of violating the highway code, insubordination and insulting a police officer. They both appealed their sentences and were released pending trial.

Four people were injured in the early hours of Saturday when students and anarchists came to blows in central Exarchia, police in Athens said. According to witnesses, around 120 students belonging to a union affiliated with the Communist Party had been sitting outside the union’s offices in Exarchia when they were attacked by a group of anarchists wielding sticks and other objects. The clashes reportedly lasted for about an hour, after which four students were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police in Patras were yesterday investigating the circumstances of a family dispute in Kato Achaia late Friday that ended with two people dead. According to police, a 36-year-old man allegedly shot and killed his 62-year-old brother-in-law before turning the gun on himself. The two men had been out gathering olives when the dispute occurred, according to the wife and daughter of the elder man.

A group of burglars robbed two homes in western Attica and one in eastern Attica in the early hours of yesterday morning, netting more than 20,000 euros, according to police. The first raid in Nea Makri occurred at around 2 a.m., according to the elderly residents of the house targeted, who said they were forced to hand over 16,000 euros at gunpoint. The other two raids were carried out about two hours later in Kineta and Nea Makri, western Attica.

Port Authority officials on Samos intercepted a total of 100 would-be migrants on the island and on the nearby islet of Paximadia over the weekend, the Merchant Marine Ministry said. Ministry officials did not determine the ethnic origin of the immigrants.
