Greek MP Nikolopoulos insults Luxembourg PM on Twitter

Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel took to Twitter on Thursday to insist that relations between him and Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and between the two countries “are perfect” after being on the receiving end of a homophobic tweet from an independent Greek MP.

Bettel is openly gay and earlier in the week Nikos Nikolopoulos, a former New Democracy lawmaker and vice president of the right-wing Union for the Homeland and the People, had commented on the Luxembourg premier’s decision to marry his partner by tweeting, “From the Europe of nations to the Europe of faggots.”

The Greek deputy was heavily criticized by other users of the social network for his comment but was unrepentant, issuing a longer statement in which he raged against the possibility of Greece following other European countries and allowing civil partnerships between same-sex couples.

“I refuse to accept the gay agenda that some people are trying to impose,” the MP said before adding that he feared Greece might permit “pedophilia and bestiality, as happens in Germany and the Netherlands.”

Bettel played down the matter by tweeting that relations between Greece and Luxembourg “won’t be affected by the comments of an isolated politician.”
