NATO’s Stoltenberg admits error in ‘Macedonia’ reference

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has, according to diplomatic sources, assured Greek officials that he did not consciously refer to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) as “Macedonia” in comments made before a meeting European Union foreign and defense ministers earlier this week.

Stoltenberg referred to the current unrest in “Macedonia” several times to reporters, prompting a complaint from Greece’s permanent representative at NATO.

Sources said on Wednesday that Stoltenberg admitted he made an error and asked for his apologies to be conveyed to the Greek ministers who took part in the meeting.
