Bazaar for our best friends

Animal lovers of Athens, including a large number of foreigners, have a date today for some Christmas shopping at the Animal Welfare Bazaar. «Proceeds from the gifts will help about 200 stray animals in Attica, in areas such as Haidari, Menidi and Liosia,» said Kostis Zois, president of the Greek Animal Welfare Society. Strays are everywhere, in Syntagma Square, in Kolonaki and Kifissia, fed by kindhearted local residents and shopkeepers. Vangelis is a white dog that helps out with the parking problems in front of the Theoxenia kiosk, by barking at shoppers who overstay their welcome. Helbi will be there during the afternoon. Everyone should help, firstly because it is a good cause and secondly because we have to show just how many animal lovers there are and how aware we are. Let’s not have any mass killings of strays before the 2004 Olympics, as is being rumored. Now anyone abandoning an animal will have to pay a fine. A plate of food, clean water, a warm place to curl up at night is all these animals want, and will repay them with a wagging tail and the unconditional devotion of a faithful friend, 24-hours a day. Clothes, books and toys will be on sale at 7 Monis Petraki, Kolonaki from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Refreshments will be available.
