Prizes, new publications, book events

The latest in an ongoing series of events commemorating the 60th anniversary of the death of poet Costis Palamas is a round-table discussion on Palamas as satirist, taking place on Monday, November 10. The National Book Center (EKEBI) and the organizing committee for the commemorative events have arranged the discussions under the aegis of the Culture Ministry to highlight various aspects of the poet’s life and work. The speakers are: Xenofon Kokkolis, assistant professor of Greek Literature at Thessaloniki University; Christina Dounia, associate professor of Modern Greek Literature at Crete University; and Vangelis Hadzivassileiou, critic-essayist. Nea Estia magazine editor Stavros Zoumboulakis will moderate. This series will continue every Monday until 1 December. (At the Culture Ministry Amphitheater, 20-22 Bouboulinas, 7.30 p.m.) Tributes The European Translation Center (EKEMEL) is paying tribute to the memory and work of the late translator Alexandra Papathanassopoulou (1947-2002) on November 11 at 8.30 p.m. at Ypsilon Press, 15 Tzavella, Exarchia. The speakers will be translator-critic Aris Berlis, editor-translator Andreas Pappas and writer-critic Giorgos Aristinos. (Information: EKEMEL tel 210.363.9520.) Kastaniotis is honoring the artist and writer Dimitris Mytaras on 10 November, at 7.30 p.m. at the Benaki Museum. The speakers are Athens University Rector Giorgos Babiniotis, National Gallery Director Marina Lambrini-Plaka, Ta Nea Managing Editor Pantelis Kapsis and poet Yiannis Kontos. Actor-director Stamatis Fasoulis will read excerpts from Mytaras’s work. (At 1 Koumbari, 210.367.1000.) The universe Intrigued by the cosmos? Keep the date of November 11 in mind. That’s when Erevnites is launching «The Discovery of the Galaxies,» by Dionysis Simopoulos, director of the Evyenidio Planetarium. The volume is the latest title in the series «Secrets of the Universe,» produced by the Foundation of the Hellenic World. Manos Danezis, associate professor of Astrophysics at Athens University, and Giorgos Zarkadakis, editor of Focus magazine, will present the book. (At Athinais, 34 Kastorias, Athens.) Launches Efessos and Alithiea publishers are launching their co-published «Eternal Idols of Art and Culture,» a bilingual English-Greek edition and DVD, at the Old Parliament, on Stadiou Street, today at noon. Written by Costas Tsarouchas, with photographs by Yiannis Yiannelos and Nikos Imellos and from the collections of foreign archaeological schools in Greece, the book covers theater and sport in Greek antiquity, ancient Greece in the museums of Athens, classical Athens and the sculptures of Athens. State literary awards Poet Miltos Sachtouris has won the 2003 Grand State Literature Prize for his life’s work, the Culture Ministry announced Monday. The poetry prize went to Manolis Pratikakis for «The Water» (pub. Metaichmio); Tassos Goudelis took the short story prize for «The Woman Who Speaks» (Kedros); and the prize for fiction went to Dimitris Dimitriadis for «Anthropodia: An Incomplete Millennium» (Kastaniotis). In the essay-criticism category, the award went to Stavros Stavridis for «From Screen City to Stage City» (Ellinika Grammata), while the chronicle-report prize went to Panayiotis Kousathanas for «Ravings I: Texts on the Culture and History of Myconos» (Indiktos).
