Municipality of Maroussi prepares for Olympic Games through art

The Municipality of Maroussi, where the heart of the Olympic Games will be beating, has prepared a full program of cultural events, including exhibitions of ceramics, sculpture and painting, concerts and the creation of new institutions, such as the European Exhibition of Ceramics and the Museum of Ceramics, as well as the composition of a new musical piece by Yiannis Markopoulos. The world premiere of Markopoulos’s composition «The Fleet-Footed Louis» stands out among the events. Markopoulos composed the piece, which was commissioned by Maroussi Municipality, for the 2004 Games. Based on poetry by Panos Theodoridis and texts by Theodossis Pelegrinis, the work will be presented at the Anavryta Theater on the Syngrou Estate on July 28. Costas Makedonas, Tassis Christoyiannopoulos and the Fons Musicalis Choir will participate, while Costas Kazakos will narrate. A new institution, the First European Exhibition of Ceramics, which will open on July 25, is eagerly awaited. All the exhibits to take part in the competition will be on display in Maroussi’s Iroon Square, where the International Olympics Museum of Ceramics will also be situated, to open a few days before the Games. Eleven well-known artists are to create two works each, inspired by the Games, and which will be housed in the Olympic Municipal Gallery. Artists to participate include Tsoklis, Psychopaidis, Fassianos, Kessanlis, Botsoglou and others. Maroussi Mayor Panayiotis Tzanikos presented the program to journalists recently and stressed that Maroussi is creating institutions which will continue after the Games.
