Literary year in full swing again

Today, the feast day of Jerome, patron saint of translators, is International Translation Day and once again the European Translation Center (EKEMEL) is holding an event in its honor. «Translation: Theory and Practice» is the subject of today’s panel discussion, also being held to coincide with the publication of Grigoris Kondylis’s Greek translation of George Steiner’s «After Babel» (Scripta). The speakers are Stelios Virvidakis, David Connolly, Costas Koutsourelis, Aris Berlis, Vangelis Bitsioris, Takis Poulos and Miltos Frangopoulos. Prize juries The much-discussed State Prizes for Literature have acquired juries, the Culture Ministry announced today, without stating when and if this year’s prizes will be awarded. For the State Literary Prizes, the chairman is Professor Giorgos Babiniotis, Dean of Linguistics at the Philosophy School of Athens University, and the jury members are professors Eleni Marmarinou and Zachos Siaflekis, critics Nikos Bakounakis and Elissavet Kotzia, critic and writer Costas Voulgaris, poet Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke, writer and translator Takis Theodoropoulos, and writer Tilemachos Alaveras. Chair of the literary translation prize committee is Professor Constantinos Svolopoulos and the members are Professor Fotis Dimitrakopoulos, writer-translator Aris Marangopoulos, critic Argyro Mantoglou, translator-publisher Ioulia Tsakiri, Professor Giorgos Kentrotis, translator Costas Koutsourelis, lecturer Maria Kakavoulia and Professor Stavros Deligiorgis. The Children’s Book Prize jury committee is chaired by Professor Eugene Trivizas, and the members are Professor Vassileios Anagnostopoulos, Assistant Professor Andreas Karakitsios, critics Eleni Sarantiti and Mariza Decastro, illustrators Petros Zambelis and Giorgos Golfinos, and writers Ioanna Foka and Vangelis Iliopoulos. For children Metaichmio Press and the Panda Club, the children’s section of WWF-Hellas, invite children and their families to meet Tzitziko-Pericles, the cicada who dreamed of becoming a great composer at noon this Saturday at the Evripidis sti Stoa bookshop in Halandri. Writer Eleni Svoronou, illustrator Maria-Louisa Vafiadaki, Nancy Koutava of the Panda Club and Christos Christopoulos of WWF-Hellas will use theater, storytelling, music and games to bring to life the book «Tzitziko-Pericles, Greece’s Great Music Composer!» (11 Andrea Papandreou, tel 210.680.0644.) Book launch «With Pencil and Paper: Moments of Reflection» (Ianos) by Michalis Papadopoulos, president of the Pedagogical Institute, is being launched at the Stoa tou Vivliou on Monday, October 4 at 12.30 p.m. with the help of Education Minister Marietta Giannakou, writer Sarantos Kargakos and Professor Giorgos Babiniotis.
