Two leading singers to finally come together at Votanikos

The time has come for Haris Alexiou and Eleftheria Arvanitaki to finally join forces on stage. Beginning tomorrow, the two leading Greek singers will share the spotlight at the Votanikos musical venue. In the last 30 years, Haris Alexiou has built a solid career in the world of contemporary Greek music. Never one to rest on her laurels, however, Alexiou is on a constant aesthetic quest, and continues to move audiences with her interpretations while never forgetting the public’s need to be genuinely entertained. Alexiou entered the Greek music scene in the early 1970s. Her first major collaboration in the field came in 1972, when she participated in an album featuring Giorgos Dalaras and songs written by Apostolos Caldaras and Pythagoras. Since then, she has recorded more than 30 albums. Eleftheria Arvanitaki, on the other hand, enjoys a steady relationship with traditional, rebetiko and popular Greek song, while maintaining strong ties with leading powers of contemporary music in Greece – but also abroad. Arvanitaki’s broad interpretative range is reflected in her collaborations with prominent local and international composers, songwriters and poets. Born in Piraeus, Arvanitaki joined the Opisthodromiki Kompania in 1980, thus marking her debut in singing. Her first album, «Eleftheria Arvanitaki,» was released in 1984, while a year later, the singer embarked on a solo career, after the band was dissolved. Besides a steady crop of high-quality albums and collaborations (including Philip Glass), Arvanitaki has also participated in three WOMAD festivals. Beginning this week – and following their participation in the closing ceremonies of the Athens 2004 Olympics – Haris Alexiou and Eleftheria Arvanitaki come together to present a program based on their music while opening a new chapter in the communication with their audience.
