Latin American authors and their works to feature in Athens tribute

A series of events titled «Literary Journeys to Latin America» kicks off tomorrow at the city’s Palenque club in Goudi. Until March 10, the works of a Latin American author will be presented at the club every Thursday with the use of audiovisual material. The presentations will be coordinated by author Nikos Kounenis and are being organized under the auspices of the Cervantes Institute. Among the featured authors are Jorge Luis Borges, Juan Rulfo, Daniel Chavarria, Pino Cacucci, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Luis Sepulveda and Julio Cortazar. Beginning tomorrow at 7.30 p.m., author-translator Dimitris Kalokiris will present legendary Argentinean author Jorge Luis Borges, while on January 20, author-translator Philippos Drakondaidis will present the work of Mexican author and photographer Juan Rulfo (1918-1986). Following the first two evenings, the rest of the presentations coincide with works published recently in Greek. In this light, Daniel Chavarria’s «Heretismata ston Theio» («Greetings to the Uncle,» published in Greek by Opera Editions) will be presented by author and film critic Tassos Goudelis on January 27, while actress Georgia Anesti will read excerpts from the book. Italian author Pino Cacucci’s «San Isidro Futbol» (also published by Opera editions) will be presented by Nikos Kounenis on February 3, while author-translator Achilleas Kyriakidis will read from the book. Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s latest work «Memorias de Mis Putas Tristes» (published in Greek by Livanis publishers) will be presented by author-translator Klaiti Sotiriadou on February 10. February 17 will be dedicated to Luis Sepulveda. Publisher Giorgos Myresiotis will speak about the Chilean author, followed by a screening of «Coffee,» a short film by Achilleas Kyriakidis based on a Sepulveda novel.
