Journalism and culture: The role and influence of arts supplements
For years the arts supplements of Athens newspapers have offered readers news, interviews, and discussions of everything to do with culture in Greece and abroad. Next week the Stoa tou Vivliou book arcade launches a series of events showcasing the contribution these supplements make to cultural life, while asking how much they influence readers. A round-table discussion, «On familiarity with culture through the press,» is the first event (February 18, 12.30pm). Pantelis Kapsis, Ta Nea chief editor, Seraphim Fintanidis, director of Eleftherotypia, and Giorgos Romaios will speak; Professor Giorgos Veltsos will comment. Professor Giorgos Babiniotis, rector of Athens University, Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos, Deputy Press Minister Tilemachos Hytiris and Journalists’ Union Vice President Fani Petralia will address the opening session. Two equally high-powered groups of journalists will tackle the topic, «Culture pages and supplements – Need for existence and reception,» on Wednesday (February 20) and «Book culture in newspaper supplements and their contribution to building readership,» on Friday (February 22).
