Art-medicine link set to explored

A two-day conference that will explore the intersection of art and medicine begins today at the Athens School of Fine Arts and runs through tomorrow evening. «Origin of the World» – the conference’s title, inspired by the title of a famous nude painting by Manet – began as a workshop for interested students attending the School of Fine Arts and was held in collaboration with the Gynecology Clinic of the National Kapodistrian University at the Aretaion Hospital. Students visited the clinic throughout the workshop and produced works based on that experience. Participants in the conference range from doctors to writers, architects and artists. Gathered from different disciplines, the participants will explore the ways that medicine, human anatomy and physiology, fertility and reproduction have become interesting subject matter for art. The conference will also trace those topics in the development of art from the beginning of the 20th century: Typical examples will include the work of Marcel Duchamp and surrealist art. At the School of Fine Arts (256 Pireos, at the Giorgio de Chirico cinema, tel 210.480.1100), Rendi. The conference begins today at noon.
