Street demonstrations thwart memorial service

World War II veteran Colonel (ret.) David Sutherland, SAS/SBS, honored for his service in the Aegean fighting at the side of Greeks, died at the age of 85 on March 1, 2006. His sister Sarah Irby was to come to Athens on June 22 to represent the family at a memorial service at the Anglican Church on Filellinon Street in the presence of British Ambassador Simon Gass and the Greeks who fought with him. However, because of a student demonstration taking place that day, the Anglican Church did not get the go-ahead to open as it is in the center of the city. The ceremony has been postponed until the autumn.
