World Music success for Despina Vandi

On another stage, the popular singer Despina Vandi was the first female Greek singer to receive a World Music Award, for 2002, at a glittering event in Monaco on Wednesday. Vandi, whose releases «Yeia» and «Ypofero» have already won her several platinum albums, is unbeatable on stage and on record in the eyes of the younger age groups who admire her looks, her voice, her provocative costumes and her good heart. Don’t forget she sang last year at a benefit for the Elpida Children’s Foundation. Then, of course, there’s her romance with the dashing AEK soccer captain, Demis Nikolaidis. Perhaps that is why Vandi is being compared to ex-Spice Girl, Victoria Adams, wife of David Beckham. Adams, now a mother, says marriage is more fulfilling than any applause. Here’s to yours, Despina! Greece’s headline inflation in February dropped to 3.4 percent year-on-year from 4.4 percent in January, beating market expectations.
