Depeche Mode play in Athens tonight

Performing tonight in Athens for the third time since embarking on what has developed into a phenomenal career, Depeche Mode are expected to attract a major crowd at the Terra Vibe venue, on the northern outskirts of Athens. Depeche Mode, who played their first-ever Greek show back in the mid-1980s as part of an impressive lineup at Athens’s first major rock festival, are touring with a hit album, last year’s «Playing the Angel,» one of the band’s finest offerings. Over the years, the British band’s sound has evolved from the bouncy electro-pop of its early days to the more brooding and dramatic style of today. The band’s resilience has made the trio one of the alternative circuit’s most popular acts. Opening for Depeche Mode will be the Raveonettes, a band from Denmark. Decadence, a downtown Athens club (69 Voulgaroktonou Street, Exarchia) that has linked its activity with the local concert circuit for years, will celebrate tonight with a Depeche Mode post-show party. The establishment promises free entrance and a drink for concertgoers with their tickets in hand. The venue has also lined up two tributes this week, beginning with an evening dedicated to the legendary songwriter Leonard Cohen tomorrow. All ladies can expect to get in for free, the club says. Dubbed «The Return of the 80s,» the club’s next tribute, on Friday, will feature new-wave and electro-pop music from the decade, with acts such as Echo and the Bunnymen, the Cure, and the Smiths.
