Russian professor honored

The board of the Greek Writers’ Society has unanimously agreed to bestow its annual Dido Sotiriou cultural prize upon modern Greek literature professor Sonia Ilinskaya. The ceremony will be on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Benaki Museum (1 Koumbari, Kolonaki). The award has been designed by sculptor Theodoros. Ilinskaya studied classical literature at the Lomonosov State University of Moscow and specialized in modern Greek and Russian literature, and has played an active role in propagating – through extensive research and translations – contemporary Greek literature. She had been elected a regular member of the Soviet Writers’ Guild as a critic and translator of modern Greek literature and taught the subject at the University of Ioannina for 22 years. In 2002, the Russian Academy of Sciences named her Doctorati d’Etat in recognition of her work on C.P. Cavafy’s oeuvre. Ilinskaya has published 12 books that have served as the cornerstone of research into modern Greek literature in Russia and through today remain unique in the country’s bibliography.
