Celebration of international music begins on Syros today

Aiming to become a meeting point for musicians from Greece and abroad, the International Music Festival of the Cyclades 2007 opens its doors at the Apollo Theater on Syros today. The event runs to September 1. At the celebrated theater – also known as «La Piccola Scala» – events kick off with the festival’s strings players with Vivaldi’s «Four Seasons,» featuring soloists Lars Bjornkaer and Tobias Durholm. On Friday, the evening is dedicated to contrabass (Vassilis Papavassiliou), cello (Nikolas Kavakos) and piano (Maria Papapetropoulou). Pianist Katrine Gisling will accompany the String Quartet of the Danish Royal Orchestra on Saturday, while vocalists Eleni Giavridou and Katia Paschou will interpret chamber music on August 29. Prominent violinist Leonidas Kavakos will appear on August 31, accompanied by cellist Patrick Demenga, while the festival’s Chamber Music Ensemble will perform on the event’s final evening. The ensemble features Nikos Nikopoulos (flute), Costas Tiliakos (oboe), Yiannos Margaziotis (violin), Angela Yiannaki (viola) and Nikolas Kavakos (cello). The festival’s artistic director is Greek violin soloist Yiannos Margaziotis, while the set design at the Apollo Theater has been created by acclaimed Greek artist Alekos Fassianos.
